Tips & Tricks to Making Gender Reveal Cupcakes
- If you’re going to do any amount of cupcake decorating I strongly suggest investing in a featherweight piping bag. They are not nearly as stiff as a disposable piping bags. I own several 16 and 18 inch featherweight piping bags and they are reusable.
- The Wilton decorating tip set I’ve linked below will fulfill pretty much any home decorating need you could ever have. The mini spatula is awesome for touching up tight spots.
- You will need a small heart cookie cutter for this. I snagged mine from my mom’s old sent of cookie cutters. Remember it needs to be able to fit within the cupcake.
- The cupcakes can be stored in an airtight container for several days and still maintain freshness. The day or day before the party you an ice them and you’re good to go.
- If you’re doing any amount of transporting grab a set of the disposable clam shells from Amazon. They keep the cupcakes safe from bumping each other. I’ve also frozen plain cupcakes in these clamshells for up to a week. Allow the cupcakes to thaw for about 20 minutes and you can decorate them (simply) without even taking out of the clam shell.
Common Questions About Gender Reveal Cupcakes
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about making the perfect cupcakes:
How do I make the perfect cupcake size?
Using a cookie scoop that will hold about 3-4 tablespoons is the easiest way to make uniform cupcakes. This is equal to about 1/4 of a cup.
How do I make the perfect cupcake?
A couple of things to keep in mind when making the perfect cupcake. Start with your eggs and butter at room temperature. Remember to completely mix after each egg addition. This beats plenty of air into your batter helping them maintain their airiness.
Have your oven preheated before placing your cupcakes into the oven and bake your cupcakes in the center of the oven.
How long do frosted cupcakes last?
When stored in the refrigerator frosted cupcakes can last up to 7 days. When possible I recommend making cupcakes in advance and freezing well wrapped for up to 6 months. Having wrapped your cupcakes well and freezing them will also help keep your cupcakes moist at serving time.
What makes a cupcake dense and heavy?
Overdeveloping gluten makes for a cake or cupcake to come out dense and heavy. You want to cream your butter and sugar really well and then add each egg one at a time beating for 30 seconds after each addition. This whips the air needed into your batter. Once you have added your flour you will want to mix your batter just enough to incorporate thoroughly.
